Full name: Brendan Slade
Any nicknames:Cap, Bren
Age: 28
Species: Human
Appearance:
Brown hair in constant disarray, cool blue eyes and Stubble adorn Bren’s almost boyish features. He stands about 5’10” and constantly wears his old RAF Jacket and flying goggles pushed up on his head. His clothing in general is practical(cotton shirts/jeans/etc) and though he does own a few uniforms and suits. But no matter what he is wearing they are always worn with a sense that he’s happy wearing them and that the clothes suit him (were made for him?). This si somewhat to do with the fact that Bren is Rakishly handsome in his own way. No muscle bound Fabio but ladies still swoon at his smile.
Personality:
One of the notable things about Bren and his interactions Is that he has none of the normal distrust of Hybrids. He has just spent to long in mook jobs on Air-ships to think of them as inferior in anyway.
Bren’s real draw card in life is being exceptionally charismatic in a strange way. His charisma comes from the fact that he seems to be constantly full of energy and when faced with certain doom his manner becomes even more flippant/manic. He really does seem to thrive on danger.
The price Bren pays for this boundless energy is that he is no good at sitting still or doing boring milk-runs. If he is forced to simply ship things around for to long he falls into a kind of black depression. Takes to drinking heavily and sleeping at odd hours
The other thing that is notable about Bren is he seems to be stupidly lucky. Just things always seem to fall into place for hims usually at the last moment and usually it seems with out him doing much to it himself.
Bren is also known for having a big-heart. By which it is meant that he has a very hard time saying no to women.
Personal background and family:
Professor Slade and Mrs. Slade were what only can be described as Gentile Adventurers. They were both noted Academics publishing many papers and treatise in their lives. While they were prolific publishers they were never very focussed the professor and his wife published papers on everything ranging from biology through zoology and geology to Sociology and Anthropology. Though keeping the family home in London and an apartment in New York . The Slades spent most of their time on the move. From one glorious scientific discovery to the next. A small tribe in the Amazon this week to the discovery of a rare flower in the middle of Africa to a strange rock formation in India.
So the young Brendan Slade spent most of his on Air-ships. Climbing rigging pestering the crew and cooks. And often winning crews over to adopting him as a kind of second cabin boy. As for the time he was not on Air-ships it was spent in foreign lands. In caves or up mountains traipsing after whatever had caught his parents wandering attention. These times he spent talking to the guides or locals as best he could or wandering off to explore jungles and caves on his own. To his minders constant alarm.
While being transported around by his parents Bren was taught the rudimentary (reading, writing etc.) by an unending list of research assistants/tutors he also learnt (when somebody could force him to sit down and pay attention) about what ever it was his parents were obsessing after this time.
So by the time it was decided that young Bren should go to a proper school he could read and write and knew more about Various weird Academic subjects than some professionals in the field. He also Spoke various Languages if not well, well enough to survive in it’s country of origin.
Bren Attended one of the more esteemed boarding schools in Britain. Where he school you were either an Aviator lead by Bren(mainly those who had come to the school because their parents had the money) Or a Buckingham (mainly those who were at the school because of their parentage) named for it’s leader who was the son of the Duke of Buckingham. So throughout his school years Bren Spent his time not devoted to studies. Devoted to a sort of guerrilla war with the Buckinghams. This mainly involved raids on the other dorms for pillow fights, fights behind the bike shed and beating the Buckinghams at every sport available.
While he was at school his parents were killed when their Airship was _______________________.
Now a young man graduating from the sort of boarding school that Bren went to you had about four options : 1 Enter into the family business, Go to university (either oxford or Cambridge. Both of which meant a career in politics/Law) , Go to London and becomne a rake and a wastrel or Join Her Majesty’s Armed Forces.
Bren opted for the later. Because of his schooling and the wealth of his family he was clearly officer material though the fact that his family were not aristocratic meant that he could not start as anything higher than a non-com.
Bren excelled at the practical aspects of Officer training. The only thing to his demerit was a tendency to want to do things his way and very poor risk assessment/impulse control. Though he never crashed an air-ship or damaged anything. His methods were just …unsound.
After Training Bren was posted as Flight Officer on the new prototype Gunship the HMS Excelsior. doing routine patrol work at the top of the India.
The shipping lines and villages of the area were under continuous attack from bandits/air-pirates who operated from a base some where in the Himalayas. Though they searched again and again they could not find the base. And as much as they varied their Patrol route the bandits would always strike where they were not.
This went on for months then one night out late on the town with a group of the Hybrid crew Bren saw His CO consorting with a man the Hybrids named as one of the Bandits. After pressing his companions for details he found it was a well known fact(within the Hybrids) that the Captain and his superiors were being payed off by the bandits.
Bren spent along time mulling over courses of action. Then one day they responded to as distress call from a village on one of the mountainside Bren was on pilot duty and managed to fly a course that got them to the site before the bandits had got out of sight. The village was a smoking ruin it had not paid the bandits for protection so now everyone who wasn’t any use as a slave was dead, the old the young and the infirm brutally murdered.
His CO dithered as Bren demanded that they pursue the fleeing Bandits. Finally Bren Shot his superior and took command of the Ship. He had the Support of the mostly Hybrid crew. Only some of the Human crew tried to resist. These were either locked up or threatened with being forced to ‘Walk Home’.
Bren took the Air-ship and followed the bandits. Flying high to avoid detection. This was aided by the fact that the bandits had grown complacent due to their ‘agreement’ with the Air Force. So they led Bren and His crew back to their Base. Bren still fired up on the anger of the destroyed village waited till the bandits had tied up and then when he though most of them were in the base. He unleashed the hell that is a fully-armed British gunship unloading into a ground target. While they did manage to loose some shots from their AA guns the bandits didn’t really stand a chance. As soon as the air-ships/AA emplacements were destroyed from the Air Bren brought the ship low and let the Gatling guns do their job and last but not least Bren lead the unit of Wolf-Hybrid marines to ‘clear house’.
When the dust cleared every last bandit was dead, their leader cut down by Bren himself.
The Bren then handed control of the Gun-ship to his 2IC and left the airship at the nearest Air-port.
The ship was reported by the Royal Airforce as having gone done under fire in the attack and Bren was listed as MIA.
From that point Brens history becomes quite blurred. A frenzied mix of working simple crew level jobs on everything from Cruise Air-ships to Long haul Cargo to smuggling runs. Till finally he had the money to buy his own ship from then on he’s been keeping under the radar and doing mercenary work and occasionally saving the day.
Strengths and Weaknesses.
- To tough/stupid to die: ’Somebody didn’t tell this boy that when the Gorilla Hybrid punches you in the face you’re meant to fall over’
-Luck of an Irish Leprechaun: this kid is just stupidly lucky
-Exceptionally Well Connected: He knows at least one person in every port. Sure some of will want to smack him but after they’ve finished hurling abuse they’ll probably still talk to him.
Weaknesses:
-Women
-No ability to plan for the long term: Bren and the concept have never been introduced. Planning for the mission sure planning what to do after the mission: No
-He also tends to rely on his luck and charisma.
Role in the crew:Galant Captain
